Linda Foley, president of The Newspaper Guild Sector of The Communications Workers of America, visited The Plain Dealer Wednesday after speaking at the City Club of Cleveland about the issue of protecting reporters who refuse to reveal confidential sources. Foley met with TNG Local 1 members for two hours and discussed a variety of issues ... and shared some laughs, too.

POSTED 16 JULY 2005: CANTON OKS PACT

Members of Local 1’s Canton Repository unit ratified a new three-year contract agreement Wednesday, July 13. Three full days of “speed bargaining” resulted in the agreement, which takes effect Sept. 6, 2005, except for first-year wage increases, which become effective Aug. 7. POSTED 21 JANUARY 2005: MASSILLON RATIFIES PACT

Guild members at Local One's Massillon Independent
unit voted overwhelingly Jan. 7, 2005, to approve a
new three-year contract extension with Copley Ohio
Newspapers Inc., owners of The Independent.

The contract is expected to be approved by the
Executive Board at its Jan. 25 meeting. The pact will run from 2/1/05 through 1/31/08.

It includes across-the-board raises effective each February 1 of $15 per week or 3%, whichever is greater.
Bargaining unit employees on the payroll 2/1/05 will
receive a $100 signing bonus. Also, schedules must now
be posted no later than 96 hours in advance of the
week for which they apply, instead of 72 hours.

All other portions of the contract remain intact.


POSTED 13 JANUARY 2005: STEWARD SEMINAR

A training seminar for interested Local 1 stewards
will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan.
29, at the Holiday Inn Belden Village in North Canton.
TNG Sector Rep Darren Carroll will conduct the
seminar. Lunch will be provided.

CONTRACT EXTENSION RATIFIED

Plain Dealer Guild members ratified an eight-year
contract extension at a unit meeting Thursday, Oct.
21. Additionally, members voted to divert a $750
signing bonus to the Guild health and welfare fund.
The agreement will be effective March 1, 2006, through
February 28, 2014.

Wage/fringe package increases of $23 will be effective 3/1/06, 3/1/07, 3/1/08 and 3/1/09. A wage/fringe re-opener for the remaining four years will be bargained in 2010.

meeting at the Teamsters Local 473 hall as well as in
